Okay, in my humble opinon, this is the first really useful app I’ve found on the app store for the new iPhone. The DataCase app by Veiosoft adds some much needed file storage capabilities to the iPhone. I’ve heard of others out there, but have also heard lots of grumblings about the lack of features or other issuses. I spent the $6.99 on the advice of my friend and grabbed the app. I have to admit, I’m really glad I did.

There’s nothing to install except the app itself. My Macbook Pro instantly recognized the shared iPhone drive and was able to connect. There’s a default “Drop Box” and “Shared” folder, but the app allows you to create your own volumes and set permissions for each. You can even browse the share in your browser via the IP that’s noted right on the main application screen. It has a nice clean interface and is very intuitive to use. There’s no need for a lengthy manual to figure this one out. Bottom line.. it just works. It doesn’t take a networking genius to set it up or configure it, it’s quick, well put together and priced just right for what it offers. While I haven’t tried it on a PC yet, Veiosoft claims it works just as well on Windows.

The only piece really missing for me right now is the ability to connect and transfer files from iPhone to iPhone. Please work on that for us guys.

Buy your copy at the app store or stop by the Veiosoft website for more information.

While not a huge resource so far, the quality of the current selection is great. No matter what your favorite art style, you’re sure to find something you like.

A base price of $115 US is pretty steep, but you can pretty much bet that you’ll be the only one in the office with one of these. Add a custom stand (cut from the same piece of wood as the case) for an extra $25 then have your logo or a monogram etched on the case for another $20 and you’re up to a grand total of $160.

Some users have reported having to do a little minor trimming around the power and volume notches to get it fine tuned, but the overall impression was they iWood was a thing of beauty and that the photos don’t do it justice.

I went to the Apple store last Sunday in hopes of picking one up along with the new 16GB iPhone but sadly, they still didn’t have any in the store nor did they have any firm answer of when they would be in. Another Apple retailer advertised them in their weekly ad, but when I called, they told me they didn’t have them in store but I could order one if I wanted.

Well, the guys over at Gizmodo got their hands on a new Time Capsule and were kind enough to post their opinions and experiences for the rest of us. Run a separate network, extend your current network… all with a quick setup wizard that even mom could understand. I was pretty sure I wanted one before, but now I’m sold.

We’ve heard the rumors and have waited patiently. Apple finally announced a new line of notebook computers during Steve Jobs’ keynote speech at MacWorld 2008 today. The ultra-compact MacBook Air line is the new sibling to the existing MacBook and MacBook Pro lines.

Features include bragging rights for being “the world’s thinnest notebook,” at 0.16″ to 0.76″ - still thinner than the thinnest part of a Sony TZ series laptop. The screen is a 13.3″ widescreen backlit LCD with a magnetic latch.

The MacBook Air keyboard is familiar but now has an ambient light sensor. The new notebooks feature a multi-touch trackpad, allowing the user to double-tap and move, to rotate photos by pivoting your index finger and thumb, as well as the pinch & zoom goodness we all love from the iPhone and iPod Touch interface.

The MacBook Air also sports a Micro-DVI out, audio out, 802.11n + Bluetooth 2.1/EDR and a 45 watt MagSafe power adapter, . There’s a 1.8″ hard drive for storage - either 80GB standard, or a 64GB SSD as an option. Intel reportedly shrunk the size of the Core 2 Duo chip by 60% to fit in the new machine.

Battery life is good at approximately 5 hours. No optical drive is available on the MacBook Air, but a SuperDrive accessory is just $99. Soon to be released software will allow the portable to “borrow” a Mac or PC’s optical drive. All models feature a respectable 2GB of memory standard.

The new MacBook Air sports some nice green features. The case is fully aluminum, the first fully mercury and lead free display, circuit boards are BFR free, and retail packaging are is said to be 56% less volume than a standard MacBook.

While we’re all giddy about the new addition to the Apple family, a few folks may see a downside in respects to a few missing things.

·% Much like the iPhone, there is no user-replacable battery.

·% No Firewire port. If your external drive or peripheral relies on a Firewire port, you’re plain out of luck

·% The recessed USB port may prevent using some peripherals. Again, like the iPhone, plan to spend too much on an adapter or hub of some sort to remedy the problem.

·% No Ethernet Port. If you really need one, Apple will sell you a spiffy white ethernet “dongle” for just $29.

The new MacBook Air starts at $1799. If you’ve got way too much money on hand and need to part with it, go for the 64GB solid state drive (SSD), that should put you at just a little over $3000. The MacBook Air is available for pre-order today and should be shipping in about two weeks.

Apple announced several updates to the iPhone platform earlier today. The wildly popular iPhone has sold over 4 million units since going on sale just a mere 200 days ago. That averages 20,000 iPhones sold per day. In its first quarter of shipping, Apple reports that the iPhone garnered 19.5% of the US Smartphone market (coming in 2nd, just behind BlackBerry).

The update 1.1.3(4A93) was released today shortly after the Macworld Expo.

A few of the most notable updates are after the jump.

If you didn’t take the time to watch the video, here’s the skinny on the new features.

Customizable Home Screen - you can now move icons around to your liking and if you want, you can even create up to 9 different home screens to page through. This gives room to add all those new apps we’ll see when the SDK is released in February.

Enhanced Google Maps - now with a quick way to find you current location. While not a true GPS implementation, it seems to work really well.

Webclips - website bookmarks on your home screen. the clips will remember where you zoomed/panned to, and you are able to create up to 9 of them.

Video Chapter Options & Language Capability - available in iPod mode.

Multiple-Contact SMS - Yes, you can text all your friends at once now.

As always, you can find out more on the Apple iPhone site.

MacScoop is reporting the upcoming 1.1.3 firmware leak was an incomplete and unpolished version of the upcoming iPhone firmware update which will contain some as of yet unannounced features. One of these features is apparently going to be the ability to copy and paste content on the device.

The recent 1.1.3 leak has already brought to light features such as Google Maps location triangulation, Google Maps hybrid view, and the ability to send SMS messages to multiple recipients at once. Copy/Paste is a feature long overdue that will fill a big feature hole in the already solid iPhone arsenal.
